Simple Ways to Refresh Your Porch, Front Door & Exterior This September

There’s something about early September that makes me want to sweep the porch, water the planters, and take stock of all the little things that might need a quick refresh. We’re still soaking in the last days of summer, but fall is on the horizon—and now is the perfect time to give your curb appeal a little love.

Whether you’re planning to list your home soon or just want to enjoy that last stretch of warm weather in style, these are my go-to late-summer curb appeal fixes that make a big difference—without turning into a weekend-long project.

1. Swap Out Tired Planters

Let’s be honest—those early summer blooms might be looking a little… crispy. September is the perfect time to give your planters a refresh with late-blooming annuals, ornamental grasses, or even some leafy greens like coleus or ivy.

Lisa Tip: Stick to one or two colors for a cohesive look. I love pairing dusty pinks or deep purples with silvery greens this time of year—it feels rich, but not quite “fall” yet.

2. Freshen Up the Front Door (Paint or Polish)

Your front door is one of the first things people notice—and it takes a beating in the sun. If yours is looking faded or dull, now’s a great time to give it a fresh coat of paint (or even just a good clean and polish if it’s wood).

Go bold with a deep navy or classic black, or keep it soft and summery with sage green, soft blue, or warm taupe.

3. Replace or Clean Your Doormat

It’s a small touch, but it goes a long way. Swap out that worn-out summer mat with something simple, clean, and welcoming. Look for something with texture or a neutral tone that will transition well into fall.

Bonus: Layer a patterned outdoor rug underneath for that styled, curated look.

4. Add or Update Outdoor Lighting

Longer shadows and earlier sunsets are creeping in, so check your outdoor lights. Are they all working? Do they feel current and welcoming? A new sconce or even just switching to a warmer-toned bulb can make your entrance feel inviting again.

5. Tidy Up Trim, Touch Up Paint, and Power Wash

This is your “look closer” moment. Step back from the house and do a 10-minute audit:

Most of these things can be handled in an afternoon—but the difference they make in photos (and in-person impressions) is huge.

You don’t need a big renovation to feel proud of your home’s exterior. A few well-placed tweaks can make your home look fresh, intentional, and cared for—whether you’re hosting one last outdoor party, planning to list, or just coming home from the grocery store with a smile.

And if you’re getting ready to sell? These little curb appeal fixes are exactly the kind of details buyers do notice.

Need help seeing your home with fresh eyes? I’m always happy to do a walk-through and help you prioritize what matters most.
